First family hike at Palomar Mountain

What a beautiful day! The 3 of us headed up to Palomar Mountain on Saturday for a hike. We have been having more luck with Kellen being calm in his car seat so we decided it was time to branch out and try to do something with him that we loved to do before he was born. Palomar mountain has always been a special place to me since the first time I went there for sixth grade camp. I camped there with my friends for my 18th birthday and have gone on lots of day hikes and short camping trips at Palomar. It is such a pretty place and the hour and 1/2 drive up there is just as pretty. There was a fire there recently that nearly destroyed the state park so I was anxious to see how the park was doing. Saturday was a beautiful spring day, the sun was warm and the air was a little cool. Perfect for a hike. The flowers were blooming all along the highway on the way up and as we neared the mountain I could see the scars from the fire. It was sad to see so many tall old trees charred and leafless. But, there were many positive signs of fresh spring growth everywhere.

Kellen did pretty well. He napped most of the way up there and was only fussy the last 1o minutes or so. On the way home he napped most of the time as well, but did wake up for about 20 minutes and was not a happy camper. Oh well, I just need to remind myself that babies cry and I can't expect him to be happy 100% of the time.

Here we are at Doane pond before we started our hike. We had just finished a submarine sandwich from the old school Submarina #2 in Tierrasanta. I hadn't been there in forever. When I ran in to pick up the sandwich the same lady was working the counter ( I think she is the owner) that used to when I was 9 years old. And there I was, a Mom with a husband and a 5 month old in the car, ordering the same sandwich that I used to in 4th grade from the same woman! Anyway, the food was good and we were ready for our 3 mile hike through the Lower Doane Valley.
Here we are at the Weir, which is an old structure that was built in the 20's. It was meant to measure water flow from the creek to see if it was powerful enough to be harnessed for energy. The flow is too low for anything like that and all that remains is this little stone building that kinda looks like a castle tower. At sixth grade camp they told us a little green man had been spotted living in the Weir. We didn't see him!

Here is an example of the fire damage next to a tree that survived.
Ahhh, the joys of self portraits. Some day we will get the hang of it!
Looks like someone is all tuckered out.
Our little explorer is sleeping hard.

Looks like you had a great time. I LOVED 6th grade camp. I totally remember the story of the litle leprechaun or whatever they told us. Palomar Mountain is beautiful. I haven't been there in years. Glad you had a nice family day in the sun!
